Kia EV9 - An Overview
Quoting Kia directing from their website, the EV9 is their "newest, most generation-defining electric car". The EV9 is a fully electric 7- seater SUV designed to cater for all of the family. It recently won the What Car? 'Best Electric' car in the Car of The Year 2024 Awards. The car itself is actually huge; its cube-like design boasts an dominating road presence. In terms of comparisons and direct competitors, there are surprisingly few cars on the market that can take on the EV9. Whilst the mini-SUV EV market is become more saturated, there are not many options available when looking for an EV with 7 seats. 2025 will see the Volvo EX90 hit the roads, which is also an electric 7-seater. Apart from that, other large EV SUVs include the Audi Q8 e-Tron or the BMW iX, although this are not 7-seaters. The Tesla Model X offers 7 seats but that is only available in left hand drive in the UK for new models.
So, it seems that the Kia EV9 has captured a key corner of the market where there was a potential gap.

The Exterior
Despite its upright and box design, the EV9 has been meticulously designed to deliver high aerodynamic performance to improve efficiency. It has minimal airflow openings to assist with this. We have already touched on how huge this car actually is. Its total length is just over 5 metres long, it is 2 metres wide and stands nearly 1.8 metres high. In other words, it is genuinely massive!
At the rear, it has a "unique star map lamp" where the lights have three branches, giving it an instantly identifiable presence. All trim levels come with sleek designed flush door handles that automatically pop out to allow access. Being a spacious family SUV, you might want to load up with a roof box and hit the road on a trip; all models of the EV9 come standard with roof rails, although on the Air model they are silver and on the GT-Line and GT-Line S they are gloss black.
We will discuss the stunning interior, but if you wanting to keep the interior a secret to the outside world then you're in luck. All models come with privacy glass as standard. Unfortunately, if you wanted the impressive double sunroof then you will need to opt for the GT-Line S.
The front lights on the EV0 are just has identifiable at the front as they are at the back. The Air model comes with LED Headlights with Adaptive Driving Beam, whilst the GT-Line and GT-Line S includes the Small Cube Design. All trim levels have LED Daytime Running Lights.
Colour Choice
Aurora Red is the Standard free paint choice across the range.
For £725 you can opt for White Pearl (Premium), Midnight Black (Premium) or Lithium Silver (Premium). The GT-Line and GT-Line S offers two additional paint choices of Shadow Grey or Pacific Blue, also priced at £725.
Interior Design and Comfort
The interior of the EV9 has been designed with comfort, luxury and sustainability in mind. Kia have carefully selected the materials they have used on the interior and used plant-based materials where possible. The leather is man made which is becoming pretty standardised across all manufacturers. The display screen really stands out when you first step into an EV9; the triple panoramic display infotainment system is comprised of two 12.3" screens and one 5.3" screen spanning across the dash board. Accessing the EV9 is done with a digital key, allowing you to unlock, start and pre-heat your car from the touch of app.
One amazing feature that is completely unique to Kia is the implementation of Fingerprint recognition on selected models. This allows you to use your fingerprint to tell the car who is driving, automatically adjusting the seat and drive position that you pre-set.
Standard on all models are 2nd row swivel seats in the back, allowing for full seat rotation.
Range and Charging
One of the biggest issues still facing EVs is drivers' apprehension to make the switch. Range anxiety remains at the forefront of minds. The Kia EV9 has the longest range in the Kia line up. It boasts up to 349 miles of maximum range, although we would expect this to realistically be around 290-300 miles of range. With that sort of range, you could comfortably plan for most journeys, including some longer ones. The charging is a big seller here, though. The ultra-fast charging can give you approximately 154 miles, which is the equivalent of going from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes.
Kia's website has a lot more information on public charging and home charging for the EV9.
